Afternoon Note

Rebound Falters

By Karina Hernandez, Senior Research Analyst

Major indices started the day off with some strength, but lost steam intraday. The only major index still in the green is the Russell 2000, albeit only marginally.

The ten-year treasury yield (TNX) dipped just below 4.8%.

Six out of eleven sectors are in the green. Utilities (XLU) is leading the way up, while Health Care (XLV) is the laggard.

Notably, the Financials (XLF) sector is trading higher as major banks kick off earnings season tomorrow.

Most of the volume is in Technology (XLK), Financials (XLF), Health Care (XLV), and Utilities (XLU). The size of the boxes in the chart below indicates the amount of volume instead of market capitalization.

Market breadth has improved as advancers are outpacing decliners on both the NYSE and NASDAQ. However, new lows are still outpacing new highs on both the NYSE and NASDAQ.
