Mixed Monday

It’s a holiday shortened week, with the markets closing at 1pm tomorrow and closed on Wednesday for Christmas.  It looks like traders and investors are already headed out for the holiday, as volume is relatively light.

Indices are mixed today but coming off the morning lows. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite rebounded into the green, while the Russell 2000 and Dow Jones are still marginally in the red.

The only sectors in the green are Technology (XLK) and Communication Services (XLC). The laggard is Consumer Staples (XLP), which is down 1.96%.

The Ten-Year Treasury (TNX) is up 3.4 basis points and currently at 4.558%.

Durable Goods Orders fell 1.1% m/m, below the upwardly revised October increase of 0.8%, and below the estimates of -0.4%.

Notable Changes:

Building Permits rose 5.2% m/m to 1.493M, revised lower from the initial estimate of 1.505M, and higher than October’s decline of 0.4% to 1.419M.

New Home Sales rose 5.9% m/m to 664,000, topping the estimates of 650,000, and well above October’s 14.8% decline m/m to 627,000. Sales rose in the Midwest and South regions, while falling in the West and Northeast regions.
