Afternoon Note

Coiled Market

This market was a coiled spring at the opening bell.

There is a greater sense of anxiety and "fear."

Most stocks got hit.

However, there is still optimism.

The Michigan Consumer Sentiment report rose to 74 in December, compared to 71.8 in the prior month, and the highest since April. Notably, the expectations gauge was revised higher to 73.3 from 71.6, but this was offset by current conditions being revised lower to 75.1 from 77.7. In addition, final inflation expectations were revised lower to 2.8% from 2.9% for the year ahead and 3% from 3.1% for the next five years.

The street is okay with a slower Fed.

Now we need to see congress get its act together - and right now, the market believes it will.
