Afternoon Note

Buyers Emerge

By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst
4/1/2025 1:14 PM

The avalanche of soft data has pounded the market like a game of whack-a-mole, and even this morning, the pounding continued.

Manufacturing PMI slipped back to contraction with employment plunging and prices surging.

But a funny thing happened when the market stumbled out the gate – buyers emerged led by Consumer Discretionary (XLY) stocks.

The biggest gainer is Tesla (TSLA), which deep-pocketed organizers have assaulted. I’m not an EV fan, but what has happened to this company is despicable.  Most folks vandalizing and intimidating dealers and owners of these vehicles have never built a thing.

Shutting Down the Bears

Lots of bears and foes of Trump gloated after the close yesterday that the intraday reversal was already over (pointing to futures) and was just a phenomenon of late pension fund buying.

ZeroHedge: "To dampen the buy-the-dip tactical buy case even further, remember that that big quarter-end rebalancing flow now is [mostly] over. They really waited until the last 10 minutes. Yesterday's market on close buy imbalance (for pension buying) was the highest on record."

A strong close today ahead of Liberation Day would be a blow to their overarching doom and gloom messaging.

Please don't have Casone sit in for you. I think every other word was how bad Tariffs will be. Buy American made, no tariffs. How much more will an F150 made in America cost on 4/3?? DOJ must get after Tesla protestors. Hope musk can sue organizers. People can get afraid to even go to a dealership. Tons of investment coming into America and media is silent. Would we even know about Taiwan Semi investment if Trump hadn't had a news conference. Casone might want to focus on that except I think she hates Trump

Yeah, but she's good looking

I agree with Pat. Casone was blowing the doomsday horn. We hear enough of that among the "other" media outlets. I don't watch them.

But looks won't overcome the vocal fry. So painful. CC seems to invite the fear mongering from certain guests too. I'd vote for Riggs as the default sit-in host, but her having the prior show probably makes that tough.

We missed you today Charles. I agree with commenters, Casone was not a good pick to fill in.
