Payne's Perspective: April 14, 2025: Consumer Sentiment Crash

What if I told you last week that it was the best market for over a year?

The day after ‘the pause’ was announced, I started my show: Making Money with Charles Payne, explaining “Deus ex Machina.”

A drawing of a buildingAI-generated content may be incorrect.

"Deus ex Machina,” or "god from the machine" in Latin, was a plot device in Greek and later Roman theater. An improbable event or character was introduced unexpectedly to resolve a seemingly unsolvable conflict or situation.

Back then, cranes were used to lower the hero onto the stage, typically near the play's end when the audience lost all hope.

The hope of divine intervention has been an integral part of civilization, playing an enormous role in helping people overcome desperate situations.

The solution to our agonies doesn’t always materialize as fast as we’d like. Some of the most desperate times in history lingered for years.

But we always believe the cavalry will come to the rescue.

The plot device is still used today in movies, including some classics, like Jurassic Park, when a T-Rex appears out of nowhere moments before the humans are to be killed and are attacked by two raptors.

Movie purists hated that ending, but the audience loved it. I must admit one of the reasons I’ve been a fan of foreign-made movies for decades is that they often end up unresolved or resolved so that the cavalry never arrives.

Despite what you hear in the media, recent financial market turbulence is not near the level of the crisis facing most Americans.

Ironically, the White House is trying to curb the lingering pain of globalization, which is a far more significant and impactful problem than an overdue drawdown in the stock market.

Nonetheless, last week’s 90-day ‘pause’ felt like a “Deus ex Machina” moment.
