Sears 1Q Profit Slides 39%, Hurt By Lower Margins

Sears Holdings Corp.'s (SHLD) fiscal first-quarter earnings dropped 39%, as sales were nearly flat and the retailer's domestic unit stepped up promotions of appliances and home electronics.

Sears' results are a bit of a contrast to other mass merchants and department stores that have been reporting revenue gains and expanded margins as they are able to pull back from significant discounting.
